The suspect, a resident of Newark, New Jersey whose name was not released, was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 31, and charged in connection with a fatal hit-run that happened in Croton-on-Hudson earlier in the day, Croton-on-Hudson Police announced on Tuesday, Jan, 2.
According to the department, around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, authorities found an unresponsive, unidentified male pedestrian lying on the road on Route 9 North just south of the Croton Point Avenue exit.
The man, later identified as a Peekskill resident whose name was not released, was then taken to Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation determined that the man had been hit by a vehicle that had driven away from the scene. Fragments of this vehicle, such as a front grille side cover, were found scattered at the scene of the hit-run, police said.
Following the crash, Route 9 was closed for around five hours while Croton Police and the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Accident Investigation Unit investigated the crash.
Within 16 hours of the incident, authorities were able to identify the driver and vehicle involved in the crash using the pieces of the car that were found at the scene. The driver was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, a felony.
